My Cast Iron Cookware Story
Posted On 2008-08-07 , 4:01 PM
If you are just starting out on your own or as a newlywed, this little article may be of interest to you. If you have been there and done that, it might jog an old memory. Many years ago, when I got married, one of the first things that I bought was a cast iron frying pan. As I began writing this article, I wondered why it was so important to have this cast iron frying pan. Were we in need of new cookware? Was it inexpensive? Was it just something that caught my eye? After pondering these questions for a few minutes and remembering back some years ago, I determined that all of these probably helped me in my decision to buy a cast iron frying pan, but the most important factor was that I remembered using my grandmother’s a cast iron cookware, the cast iron frying pan to be more specific, to cook bacon, eggs, and even pancakes. I needed cast iron cookware.
At that time cast iron cookware was not preseasoned. So I had to season it myself, following the instructions and advice from my grandmother. After the seasoning, my cast iron cookware was ready to go. We did not use to the term non-stick surface. All we knew was that the food did not stick and it was easy to clean after we used it. I learned to use my cast iron cookware in much of everyday cooking. To this day, I still have that same cast iron skillet. It is black as coal with has a very nice non-stick surface, the perfect complement to my kitchen cookware. What are your stories of cast iron cookware?
